May 2008Letters to the EditorPotrero Nursery School Our Swing into Spring fundraiser, held on March 8th at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, was a fabulous success due to the kind patronage of so many local businesses, families and individuals. We’re very thankful for the community’s ongoing help in sustaining our school and allowing us to continue providing a preschool for so many children in our community. It’s in this spirit that we wanted to inform the community that we’re once again looking for a new home for our school. Due to Starr King Elementary School’s tremendous success and growth, there may no longer be room for us at the school, starting this summer. We’re very appreciative of the friendships and camaraderie that we’ve built at Starr King over the past three years. In December of 2006 we began working with the San Francisco Unified School District to renew our lease at Starr King, and, when that wasn’t possible, to find a new location for our school within another nearby SFUSD facility. However, we received word on March 18th that the space SFUSD had proposed to us was no longer available. We’ve now appealed for help to the Superintendent of Schools, Carlos Garcia, the SFUSD Board of Education, as well as many local community leaders who’ve been supporters of our school, including the Potrero Residents Education Fund, Former Mayor Art Agnos, Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, School Board Vice President Kim-Shree Maufas, and School Board Commissioners Jane Kim and Eric Mar. We’ve been told that SFUSD will know by Monday, April 21st if they have space to accommodate our school. In the interim we’re looking into every option available to find a permanent home for Friends, so that we can secure the school’s long-term stability and ensure it can support the families and children in our community for many years to come. We’re very hopeful and determined to remain here on Potrero Hill. Our preschool has been around for 12 years; we look forward to many more! To this end, we wanted to let the community know about what’s happening with our little school, and perhaps even see if View readers can help. Please don’t hesitate to give us any thoughts or suggestions you might have.

Goodbye Michael-Gary I’d like to thank all my friends and neighbors on Potrero Hill for making my 28 years as owner of Michael-Gary & Company Hair Design on 20th Street such a great experience. My partner and I are moving to Klamath Falls, Oregon to live near family and friends. The years have gone by so fast: it’s hard to believe it’s been that long! I’ve sold the salon to a wonderful couple, Loren and Oxana Trias. They have many new and exciting ideas for expansion. Stop by and meet them. It’s sad for me to say good-bye – I will truly miss so many people – but I’m looking forward to the future. Big hugs and farewell to all!
