September 2008Bayview Police Captain Aims to Improve Neighborhoods’ Quality of LifeBy Stacey PalevskyBayview Police Captain John Loftus knows San Francisco inside and out, having lived or worked in the City all of his life. “I don’t think I’d be a police officer anywhere else other than San Francisco,” said Loftus, who joined the Bayview Police Station earlier this year after serving in the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) for more than a quarter-of-a-century. Loftus knew his new job would be challenging. Bayview-Hunters Point has long been home to gang violence: the area’s leading cause of premature death is homicide. In 2008 there’s been more than a dozen homicides in the 9.1 square mile Bayview District, which includes Potrero Hill. “Violent crime is our top issue,” he said. “There’s been a big surge in juvenile crime. It’s a real problem and much more difficult to address. I don’t want to incarcerate a 16 year old.” |
