November 2009D10 Candidates Continue to Introduce ThemselvesBy Joni EisenPotrero Hill Democratic Club’s October meeting, held at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, began with the club’s second open mic for District 10 Supervisorial candidates. Three candidates introduced themselves, speaking in random order. Activist Marie Franklin has worked with five mayors and numerous other officials over the 30 years she’s lived in District 10. She said she had solutions for several problems, including voter turnout, which she said she helped raise to record levels during Willie Brown’s campaign. She also has plans for back-to-basics education, environmental justice, safe housing, renovation of senior services, and better communication between elected officials and constituents. She said, “I believe it’s my time to be supervisor,” because of her specific plans for each of these concerns, and her energy and resilience. Attorney Kristine Enea had a Bay Area education she said every child deserves: good, safe schools with sports, art, and music. She’s worked in environmental litigation, characterizing herself as “definitely a negotiator” with a focus on “attacking the problem and not the person.” Chair of the India Basin Neighborhood Association, Enea declared India Basin’s issues to be everyone’s issues: transportation challenges, land use, public safety, and economic, educational and environmental equality. She envisioned tourists in the future drawn to District 10 because of its waterfront attractions, sunshine, and diverse population. A 22-year veteran of the San Francisco Unified School District who has been a teacher, principal and counselor, James Calloway has either worked or lived in District 10 his entire life. He wants to make a difference in the community via safer streets, better health services, a clean environment, educational programs rather than more prisons, and green jobs in the District. He cited the importance of hiring local residents for economic development projects. He vowed that if elected, he will always be available to his constituents.
Potrero Hill Democratic Club’s August meeting featured introductions by candidates Malia Cohen, DeWitt Lacy, Steve Moss, Linda Richardson, Diane Westley Smith and Eric Smith. The field is large and there will be more to come. The Club will host a candidates’ forum as the November 2010 election draws near.
