UPS Shooting

Last month, 38-year-old Jimmy Lam shot and killed San Franciscans Wayne Chan, 56, and Benson Louie, 50; as well as 46-year-old Michael Lefiti, of Hercules, California, at the UPS San Francisco Customer Center, located a couple of blocks east of Franklin Square. Lam committed suicide when confronted by police. Two other people were shot and survived. A View photographer happened on the scene shortly after the shooting. He encountered a large motorcycle officer, who was yelling at a van driver attempting to turn west on 16th Street. “I don’t care what you want!” he shouted. Our photographer asked the officer if he could get through on 15th Street, who shouted back, “There’s a shooter. If you want to get shot, go that way,” pointing towards 17th and San Bruno. A few hours later a cluster of journalists interviewed a UPS driver. When they broke apart, he walked over and hugged a woman police officer. He was a big man in tears.
