Art: The Tramp
An exhibition by Bay Area-based Justin Caguiat and Rafael Delacruz, The Tramp brings together film, installation, painting, and prints, marking the artists’ first institutional exhibition on the West Coast. At the exhibit’s heart is a new film by Caguiat and Delacruz that follows Wesley – dressed in baggy pants, snug jacket, and bowler hat – his dog Chips, and Hiroko as they wander the streets of Oakland and Half Moon Bay’s fields. The film draws upon Charlie Chaplin’s iconic character, The Tramp, first introduced in a 1915 eponymous silent film. Chaplin’s Tramp was a mischievous character navigating the margins of a rapidly modernizing society, using wit and humor to evade authority. Caguiat and Delacruz transform the gallery into an immersive environment. Opening reception on June 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Free, RSVP requested but not required. California College of the Arts Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, 145 Hooper Street. For more information: bit.ly/4tqQlmT
